    From Niche to Mainstream

Previously, gaming tournaments used to make up a very minor portion of the gaming industry. These competitions were like an informal gathering for gaming enthusiasts where only a numbered population would gather and watch them. Other than gamers only a few people would assemble as gaming wasn’t seen as something worth investing time and money on. So in the start, gaming competitions were not as huge and also were not conducted in large stadiums and arenas.

They were more of a niche and genre in the gaming sector. The first full-fledged gaming competition was held at Stanford University in 1972 which was the Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics. Before this esports competition, many other competitions did happen but they didn’t gain the status of a mature esports competition.

This competition occurred after the release of Space War as before this game, there wasn’t a game offering a multiplayer gaming experience. Since then, esports competitions started getting noticed. And then the debate came about whether games should be considered a sport as there is no strenuous physical activity involved. That debate went for a while and gamers proved that how gamers hold the status of being called a sport.

Now these esports competitions have turned into the most exciting events of the year with jam-packed stadiums and arenas. There is no age, cultural or linguistic barrier to this industry which means that anyone at any age, speaking any language can participate in these events. All you need are the sharpened gaming skills and build a gaming career.

    Talking About the Driving Factors

There are many factors that have led esports to the success it has attained today. The developed features are still the top one of the reasons. The multiplayer gaming experience was a new thing for gamers in the 1970s. However, now with the advanced technology games are offering new and new experiences.

    Social Media

Social media has played an important role in raising the demand for video games and eventually for esports competitions. Platforms like Twitch, YouTube gaming, and live and Instagram reels have been really helpful in bringing gaming talent to big screens. Gamers have been able to connect with fellow gamers and build a community where they all live harmoniously. These gaming communities give insight into the gaming world and explain the latest trends.

    COVID-19 Pandemic

The pandemic forced us all to stay at our homes and restrict our social lives. We all had to do something to take a break from this endless cycle of death and the imminent danger of getting infected. Hence, many people started gaming as an activity which resulted in pursuing it as a full-time career. Even the studies suggested that games improved the mental health of patients, especially those who had an extensive social life.

    Gaming Genres

Not every game gets the status of being played in gaming competitions. Gaming genres such as first-person shooters (FPS) and real-time strategy (RTS) are the demands of the tournament. For instance, Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), League of Legends, Crossfire, etc, are a few of the games played in esports tournaments because of their distinct gaming genres and mechanics. There is a huge diversity in gaming genres which keeps the players excited. When fan-favorite games are announced to be a part of competitions, it offers all the more reason for gamers to hope for the next event.

    Gaming Translation and Esports

As mentioned earlier, there is no barrier in the gaming industry, and any individual at any time can participate. When it comes to linguistic and cultural barriers, the role of a game localization agency is the most evident one. The more the removal of linguistic barriers, the more players participate in these events and hence, the more events are conducted. Furthermore, bigger brands like Coca-Cola and Red Bull also sponsor these events, all the more reason to conduct such blockbuster events.

    Final Words

To sum up, esports as a mainstream event has gained immense popularity and reputation, there are multiple factors behind this reputation where unique gaming genres, social media platforms, and pandemic play a huge role. Translation plays a massive role in making these esports games easily accessible for players.
